Farm Bill, water issues, the Renewable Fuel Standard and many other topics will be discussed during the opening session of the eighth annual Colorado Ag Classic on Dec. 12 at the Embassy Suites in Loveland.

The session, “Getting capital at the capitol,” will feature elected state officials and representatives from Colorado’s federal delegation discussing the biggest political issues of the day and their impact on Colorado agriculture. The session begins at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, and runs until 4:30 p.m.

Emily Rudder of Genoa, Colorado, was recently selected by the Colorado Corn Growers Association for an internship in Denver working with state legislative issues.

Rudder, a Colorado State University Agriculture Business and Education student, will work with CCGA lobbyist Becky Brooks when the 2013 legislative session begins.

On Friday, the Environmental Protection Agency denied a waiver request of the Renewable Fuel Standard, noting insufficient evidence that the RFS is causing severe economic harm on any state, region or the nation.

CSU is hosting the Colorado Crop Clinic at the McKee 4H Building at the Ranch on November 27 - 28. The two-day program will provide a total of 13 Certified Crop Advisor Credits and one Licensed Applicator Credit for Ag Insects.

This is the largest crop disaster year since 1988, allowing critics to claim that crop insurance is a runaway program, but only because this crop is insured and that was not the case in 1988. Additional political rhetoric now claims the government will pay all of the crop insurance claims. They seem to forget about all the years farmers have paid premiums and in some of those years the government even generated underwriting gains. Standard Reinsurance Agreement (SRA) will determine the share of payments made by companies.
