2009 Corn Acreage Up from Previous Estimates

June 30: Despite weather challenges at key planting times, U.S. corn growers planted 2 million more acres this season than previously expected, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported today. In its annual report on planted acres, USDA estimated 87 million acres planted in corn and projects a harvest of 80.1 million acres. Once again, our nationís corn farmers are showing their resilience, the National Corn Growers Association said.

Ethanol: Fuel Of Future Or Quickly Passing Fad?

Debate Rages In Denver As International Ethanol Workshop Comes To Town

WINDSOR, Colo. -- Two years ago at the Fuel Ethanol Workshop in St. Louis, or FEW, it was standing-room only.

Wednesday, at the same workshop in Denver, it wasnít so crowded.

The industry with so much promise is struggling as several companies, including one of the largest, are bankrupt.

The question is still: fuel of the future, or quickly passing fad?

Ethanol was intended as a way to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil.

Researach Shines Light on Gulf of Mexico Hypoxic Zone

A new analysis prepared for the National Corn Growers Association looks at some of the assumptions surrounding hypoxia ñ low oxygen -- in the northern Gulf of Mexico and helps clarify the causes, effects and scope of the phenomenon.

ìWeíve always known there were a lot of misconceptions about the hypoxic zone and its causes, based often on a lack of data,î said David Ward, chairman of NCGAís Production and Stewardship Action Team, which funded the hypoxia report. ìIt is our hope that this report will help keep the discussion as grounded and data-driven as possible.î

U.S. farmers rank low on global subsidy scale

Corn Growers Catching Up in the Fields

June 2: The nationís corn growers pulled out the stops in the last week, managing to nearly complete planting the 2009 crop despite challenging weather conditions in several key corn producing states, according to the U.S. Department of Agricultureís June 1 crop report.
