Corn Provides a Positive Economic Impact

January 23, 2009 - 12:00am

In the past few years, the expansion of corn production nationwide, driven by higher yields, has seen a rise in the commodity’s impact on local, state and national economies. Overall in 2008, the U.S. corn crop of 12.1 billion bushels is valued at approximately $47.19 billion, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

While the average farm price for corn dropped from $4.20 per bushel in 2007 to $3.90 by year-end 2008, corn remains America’s top crop, said National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) President Bob Dickey.

January 16, 2009 --
If the $426 million Northern Integrated Supply Project - which already has $5 million and more than five years of work invested in it - is shot down by the federal Environmental Protection Agency, it would have devastating consequences for Northern Colorado agriculture, farm proponents say.

"Without NISP, I think you'll see thousands of acres (of farmland) going out of production and failing cities without that water," said Crystal Korrey, state affairs director for the Colorado Farm Bureau.
