The National Corn Growers Association today welcomed the news that U.S. corn growers have planted more corn acres than projected by the U.S. Department of Agricultures in an earlier report. At 87.327 million acres, planted corn acreage is approximately 1.3 million acres above the agency’s March Prospective Plantings report.
Learning Center proposals for the 2009 Commodity Classic are due Monday, June 30. Learning Center sessions are educational, timely and neutral in nature and should appeal to audiences consisting of growers and agribusiness leaders.
Commodity Classic, the annual convention and trade show of the American Soybean Association (ASA), National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), National Association of Wheat Growers (NAWG), and National Sorghum Producers (NSP) will be held Feb. 26-28 in Grapevine, Tex.
Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman and Secretary of Agriculture Edward T. Schafer sent a letter on June 11, 2008 to Senator Jeff Bingaman addressing a number of questions related to biofuels, food, and gasoline and diesel prices.
Without Biofuels, Gas Prices Would Increase $.20 to $.35 per Gallon.
-The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that gasoline prices would be between 20 cents to 35 cents per gallon higher without ethanol1, a first-generation biofuel.
-For a typical household, that means saving about $150 to $300 per year.
In comments submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Corn Growers Association urges Administrator Stephen L. Johnson to deny the request from the state of Texas to waive a portion of the renewable fuels standard (RFS).
NCGA criticized Texas Governor Perry for his baseless claims and lack of knowledge of the benefits ethanol has made to the economy. NCGA maintains that Texas has not met the standards for a waiver.
In advance of a Senate hearing Thursday afternoon on the impact of corn ethanol on food prices, two cabinet secretaries outlined research that demonstrates not only the minor influence biofuels play on retail food prices, but the degree to which they also help keep fuel costs down.
Stating that the current anti-ethanol campaign waged by the Grocery Manufacturers Association will only hurt its member companies in the long run, the National Corn Growers Association and other agriculture groups urged the organization to end its high-priced PR campaign against corn ethanol.
