Distiller Grains Exports Nearly Double in One Year

Distillers grains exports in 2007 set a new record and were nearly double export levels in 2006, according to data released this week by the Foreign Agriculture Service, Department of Commerce and U.S. Census Bureau. The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) hailed this as important news for those interested in corn ethanol’s important coproduct.

Don’t Delay … Save Now by Entering NCGA’s 2008 National Corn Yield Contest

The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) urges its members to enter the 2008 National Corn Yield Contest. The entry form, with revised rules, is now posted online and a discount is offered those whose entry forms are postmarked by July 1.

Last year, nearly 5,000 entries were received for the contest, and 529 state and national winners in nine categories celebrated yields averaging 237.1 bushels per acre – a significant increase on the overall national average in 2007 of 151.1 bushels per acre, noted NCGA officials.

GM Shifts Toward Ethanol

General Motors Corp. said Wednesday that half of its U.S. vehicle volume will run on ethanol by 2012, just as partner Coskata Inc. is expected to be ramping up ethanol production.

GM will have 11 ethanol-capable vehicles on the market this year and 15 in 2009, said GM North America President Troy Clarke in a speech at the Chicago Auto Show.

Clarke also announced that GM will produce its first four-cylinder ethanol-capable model, the FlexFuel Chevrolet HHR, in 2010.

"We don't only want to respond to the needs of the market; we want to anticipate them," he said.

Water Officials meet to Discuss Republican River Compact Compliance

LAKEWOOD, Colo. –Lead water and agriculture officials from the Colorado and Kansas met Jan. 28 in Topeka, Kan., to discuss compliance activities relevant to the Republican River Compact.

The meeting was organized by Colorado’s Department of Natural Resources Executive Director Harris Sherman and Commissioner of Agriculture John Stulp with Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Adrian Polansky and Secretary of Wildlife and Parks Mike Hayden. The meeting was to discuss strategies to address Colorado’s current and future compliance with the Republican River Compact.

New Look for NCGA’s Flex-Fuel SUV

In 2005, the Minnesota Corn Growers Association graciously donated a new flex-fuel GMC Yukon to the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) to serve a practical purpose while functioning as a rolling billboard promoting corn ethanol. The association has used it widely – it now has about 53,000 miles on it – and it recently received a reinvented look that helps it stand out.
