More than 17 months after farmers were ordered to shut down their wells in central Weld County, a water judge ruled Friday to allow some of them to pump again.

An official with the Central Colorado Water Conservancy District has called the decision "landmark," but said it is too early to determine what the ruling has on next year's pumping.

Ethanol Industry Experiences Natural Ebb, Flow of Business

The development of the alternative fuel industry is quite an interesting story -- a true tale of American ingenuity. What makes it especially enjoyable for me is that the grain, energy and financial markets are like scoreboards on the progression of the refueling of America. A new wrinkle is the expansion of the export market for DDGs. I noted a sale to Israel just recently and feed-grain-starved Europe is a hot prospect. A half dozen years ago few of us knew there was such a thing as DDGs.

Agriculture Secretary Says Oil, Weather Drive Food Prices, Not Ethanol (10-10-07

October 10, 2007 - 12:00am

Acting U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Chuck Conner said last week that higher corn prices are only a small factor behind higher food prices.

In a speech to the Renewable Fuels Association, Conner said, “The data that has been presented to me shows that it (higher corn prices) has been assigned far more than its fair share of blame for what is happening in our grocery store aisles.”

The program operating under the name E85 Tracker will sample 1,100 stations in seven regions of the U.S. every two weeks. 120 stations will be surveyed in each region on a random basis to calculate the national average price. The first survey showed E85 at $2.36 a gallon.

US Plans Clean Energy Loan Guarantees

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The U.S. government hopes to encourage investment in clean energy by agreeing to repay a portion of the commercial loans that fund alternative-energy projects, in the event of default in the financing.

The loan guarantees could cover financing for refineries that produce ethanol made from farm waste, electric generating plants that capture greenhouse gas emissions and other clean-energy projects. The U.S. Energy Department issued final regulations for the loan guarantees on Thursday.

NCGA Committee Discusses Yield Contest Changes

October 2, 2007 - 12:00am

A record-breaking year may lead to some refinements to America’s premier corn yield competition. The National Corn Yield Contest (NCYC) Committee gathered at National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) last week to discuss how more entries and higher yields might affect the competition in future years.

“It was an outstanding meeting,” said NCGA Director of Production, Stewardship and Livestock Max Starbuck.” Along with the committee, we had growers, supervisors and seed company representatives participating. Every viewpoint was represented.”
