Cultivating Opportunities
WARWICK, N.Y. (DTN) -- Kroger Company has opened 20 fueling pumps at its convenience stores in Ohio and Kentucky that offer VeraSun's branded E85, a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline for flexible fuel vehicles, a news release said.
With the addition of the 20 Kroger locations, VeraSun now has more than 100 retail fueling stations in 11 states and the District of Columbia that sell VE85.
VE85 was launched in May 2005 with seven stations in Sioux Falls, S.D., and is now available in Chicago, Ill., Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., Pittsburgh, Penn., and Washington, D.C.
Late Disaster Payments Show Need to Improve Safety Net, NCGA Says. Last week the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) set Oct. 15 as the start for growers to sign up for Crop Disaster Program assistance for the 2005 and 2006 crop years and for spring 2007 disaster assistance. The delay in timing is a problem that a revenue countercyclical program (RCCP) would solve, says the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA).
Ethanol debate
Rod Lenz pulled into the brightly lit Yuma County fairgrounds on a balmy night earlier this month. Squeals from the children's amusement rides drowned out distant thunder as he locked his worn pickup and strode toward one of the exhibition barns.
He may have anticipated what was inside.
Judges at the Yuma County Fair obviously thought highly of the entry by his children, awarding blue ribbons to their 11-foot-tall cornstalks.
"This really is no big deal," Lenz said, looking around the barn, noting that there were no corn competitors.
Harsh words, cold stares
Knox probably didn't expect a warm welcome in Yuma on a visit last month, and he didn't get one.
There were cold stares and at times harsh words as he told those assembled at the Church of the Naza-rene about the state's plans to shut off the irrigation wells within a certain distance of the river, possibly those within three or four miles.
Others, like Brett Rutledge, remain skeptical about ethanol, or what they call the "dot-corn" rush. They compare it with the "dot-com" boom and bust.
Today's corn boom is far from bust, even as a national debate plays out over the long-term effectiveness of ethanol as a motor fuel.
Even so, dark clouds of uncertainty are gathering, pushing shadows over Yuma County's summer of prosperity.

YUMA COUNTY - The field came to life in the August wind, dense stalks swaying in tandem, silky tassels swirling like so many kite tails in the sun.
Duard Fix shouldered his way through the lush stand, stopping to break off and husk a prize he'd been waiting for since May: the perfect ear of corn - nearly 800 light yellow kernels in 16 neatly symmetrical rows.
After hearing national media coverage citing ethanol as the reason for higher grocery costs, Colroado Corn, Colorado Farm Bureau and Ag Commissioner John Stulp decided to take a stand. The Denver media helped get Colorado producers' side out.

The Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) and the Colorado Office of Consumer Counsel (OCC) will be traveling to eight communities starting next week on a joint “listening tour” to hear from Coloradans about important energy issues.
OMAHA (DTN) -- Underwriters Laboratories announced Thursday that it will accept requests for certification investigations for gaskets and seals for use with concentrated ethanol-blended fuels such as E85, according to a news release from the organization.
In order to develop the requirements that will be used for certification, UL conducted a gasket and seal ethanol-blended fuel compatibility research program.
Johnston, Iowa, July 30, 2007 - The Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) today applauded a new study from the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) that explores the advantage to consumers in expanding the production of liquid fuels like ethanol.
“We’ve seen a lot of misinformation being peddled about ethanol and gasoline,” said Jim Meyer, a corn grower and ICGA director from Odebolt. “It’s refreshing to see a consumer-focused group like the CFA setting the record straight.”
