Colorado Corn
50 for Colorado Agriculture and the Eastern Plains

Katrina Davis, Ethanol Project and Membership Manager for Colorado Corn participated in the 50 for Colorado Ag Tour in Burlington. The event was hosted by Steve and Darlene Scott of Scott Farm Enterprises. Steve is a third-generation Burlington area corn farmer and serves as President of the Colorado Corn Administrative Committee. Darlene is actively involved in local, regional, state and national tourism and serves on several economic development boards.
Katrina provided information to the attendees about the Blender Pump Pilot Program, a project in partnership with the Colorado Department of Oil & Public Safety developed to provide consumers with a choice of mid-level ethanol blends at the pump: E20, E30, E40, & E85. The first blender pump in the state was opened in 2010 at the Stratton Equity Coop in Burlington. She spoke briefly about other Market Development projects currently being undertaken by Colorado Corn throughout the state, and distributed Corn Fact Books, Ag Fact Playing Cards, Colorado Corn hats, and NASCAR T-shirts to each participant.
“It’s important for everyone to understand, farmers use sound science in their day-to-day operations while growing our nation’s food supply”, said Davis. “I think the tour gave guest speakers a chance to really interact with participants to talk about Colorado agriculture and farmers in general.”
“Farmers face challenges every day from uncontrollable weather conditions and crop prices to the high cost of production and labor. We use both technology and sheer determination to make a living not only for our own families but to also grow enough to provide for 130 more people”, added Steve Scott. “Agriculture has a positive story to tell and we can’t let others tell it for us.”
Guest speakers included Mark Hillman, former senator, journalist and farmer; Clay Smith, Certified Crop Advisor and Nutrient Management planner; Ron Meyer, Kit Carson CSU Agronomist; Kevin, Gary & Greg Penny of Penny Ranch; Doug & Vanessa Worden of Worden Vineyard, and Bryon Jessee, Project Manager of Kit Carson WindPower Farm.
