Colorado Corn
While hundreds of farmers spoke up for coexistence and for their livelihoods with the Boulder County Commissioners Thursday evening, Colorado Corn Executive Director Mark Sponsler was encouraged to see the turnout from the ag community in support of coexistence allowing a wide range of farming approaches.
The hearing was regarding a proposed plan for crop management on Boulder County owned lands but the main point of contention was the use of genetically engineered crops.
“After hearing hours of testimony from both sides, it became very clear to me which side was backed by credible science and logic, and which side was motivated by fear, misunderstanding, and misinformation,” Sponsler said. “The producers in Boulder County showed incredible compassion and compromise to develop a plan that allowed organic, conventional and new technology farmers to live and farm together. I hope the commissioners heard that message and will approve the plan they worked so hard on.”
The decision on the plan was not made after the hearing and it is unclear when the commissioners will decide.
In the meantime, an online petition has been developed to support coexistence between famers and adopt the policy approved by the Cropland Policy Advisory Group. Click here to sign petition.
