Department of Transportation Announces No New Regulations for Farm Vehicles

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced yesterday that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) would not implement its proposed guidance regulating the transport of agricultural products.  The Department received strong feedback from the farming community in June and July opposing any new regulations.  NCGA and other coalition partners met with FMCSA earlier this summer and submitted comments objecting to the guidance on August 1st.

If you haven’t checked out the projects and activities of Colorado Corn lately, you may want to do just that at the Irrigation Research Foundation Farm Show on August 18 in Yuma.

Did you know that they were instrumental in the passage House Bill 1318, the 2009 transportation legislation? Its 2010 implementation allows increased weight limits on 5 and 6 axle trucks on secondary roads in Colorado, benefiting all farmers and ranchers.

Their work in the water arena includes a final year of a 3-year root architecture study at the IRF.

Truck Weight Limit Options for 2010

With harvest time upon us, new truck weight limits for 5 and 6 axle tractor-trailer units may be useful to you for loads on secondary highways, and went into effect January 1 of 2010 for permitted, divisible loads.  The new limits are the result of HB 09-1318 which passed in the 2009 Colorado legislature with the help of Representative Jerry Sonnenberg and the Colorado Corn Growers Public Policy Committee.
