President Obama wants the federal fleet of more than 600,000 vehicles to use alternative fuels by 2015.
The goal of the Presidential Memorandum issued today implementing new Federal fleet management practices is “to cut oil imports by one-third by 2025 and to put one million advanced vehicles on the road by 2015.”
By December 31, 2015, all new light duty vehicles leased or purchased by agencies must be alternative fueled vehicles, such as hybrid or electric, compressed natural gas, or biofuel.
After a thorough analysis of empirical evidence, new peer-reviewed research calls into question one of the chief claims of ethanol opponents, the negative impact of so-called “indirect land use change” as a result of corn production for ethanol. To the National Corn Growers Association, this disproves yet another anti-ethanol myth that spread so easily in the mainstream media.
“It’s time for flat-earth ethanol opponents to back off on land use change,” said NCGA President Bart Schott.
Ethanol critics are engaged in a “false debate” over biofuels and should be asking how U.S. farmers can meet energy needs, rather than whether they should, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said.
“We’re trapped in a debate that leads us down the road of shortchanging American agriculture, rather than recognizing its enormous capabilities,” Vilsack said today at the annual meeting of the North American Agricultural Journalists in Washington.
In his 2011 State of the Union Address, President Barack Obama touched on issues important to rural America and our nation’s corn farmers, the National Corn Growers Association noted. This includes the role of biofuels in reducing dependence on foreign oil, the importance of pending trade agreements, and the part our farmers play in feeding the world.
“We were encouraged that President Obama spoke about the needs of rural America and the importance of our country’s global leadership when it comes to agriculture,” said NCGA Chairman Darrin Ihnen.
Biomass Crop Assistance Program Will Help Create National Biofuels Industry; New Agreement with the FAA Will Promote Production and Demand for Biofuels; USDA Report Shows Domestic Biofuel Production Benefits the Economy
WASHINGTON, Oct. 21, 2010 – As part of the Obama Administration's effort to promote production of fuel from renewable sources, create jobs and mitigate the effects of climate change, Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced a series of measures during a speech to the National Press Club in Washington.
The ethanol tax credit, known commonly by its congressionally-bestowed acronym, "VEETC" (the "Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit" ) is the tax credit many conservatives and liberals alike love to hate. Both sides, however, would be well-advised to push aside ideologically-based peeves for the time being, and support extension of the credit beyond its scheduled December 31st expiration.

Biomass energy has received much attention in recent years. We now use about one third of the U.S.
2010 Corn Utilization and Technology Conference participants didn’t waste any time diving into showing and telling what’s cool in corn this week at the multi-day event in Atlanta. The biggest challenge facing attendees was absorbing all the information.
“This year’s theme, “Corn: America’s Renewable Resource,” was a very appropriate choice for 2010,” said CUTC Chairman Larry Hasheider in his closing remarks.
